The Weekend
The Ghostriders won one and lost one last weekend. They lost 5-3 in Invermere on Friday then won 4-1 at home against the Revelstoke Grizzlies on Saturday.
On Friday the Riders had a 2-0 and going into the third a 3-2 lead but after the first five or so minutes they were vastly out played and only the heroics of Jeff Orser, who was playing injured kept the score close. (the Rockies scored into the empty net).
On Saturday the landscape changed considerably when it was announced that goalie Jeff Orser could not go and Trail Midget AP goalie Brandon Youngson would get the start backed up by Fernie's Sawyer Ward.
Youngson (98) had played in the exhibition season and looked good but you can never really tell... anyway, he was solid against the Grizzlies stopping 38 of 39 shots and was named as the Riders Player of the Game.
He had some help as this was one of the best defensive games I've seen the Ghost play this season keeping the Grizz to the outside for many of the shots. But the Grizz still had a few big time chances especially late but Youngson didn't buckle. For the record, Brandon's father Brian played D here in Fernie in the 1999-2000 season then was an assistant coach in 2004-06... so there's the connection... if you were wondering.
Travis Thomsen scored on the power play in the first then Justin Peers and Tayler Sincennes (PP) scored in the second. Louie Federico scored for the Grizz between the Rider goals.
In the third Zach Befus scored and the Riders held on for the 4-1 lead.
Notes
1/The Riders were outshot 19-7 in the third but had to kill a 4 minute spearing penalty then a minute at the end on a roughing call. It was a great PK on the 4 minute call and Youngson came up big late when the Grizz were really pressuring.
2/ The Riders absolutely fell apart in Invermere in the 3rd allowing uncountable great chances against... but were much better Saturday. Actually they have improved considerably in their own end since the start of the season and many of the shots the Rockies and Grizz had were on giveaways or on bad decisions in their own end... like passing to guys in traffic, not shooting the puck out hard, passes up the middle etc. These are all correctable and they will be a formidable opponent when they correct some of that.
3/ Nineteen year old's Alex Cheveldave 2 games 1 G 1 A and Zach Befus 4 G 3 A in 5 games give the Riders some much needed age skill and junior "A" experience. Both are fun to watch and have an edge to them.
4/ Justin Peers (another 19 year old) had a goal and an assist in his first game back from a two game suspension and now has 2 G and 7 A in 5 games after a 40 point rookie season last year.
/5 Cole Keebler was held to 1 assist Saturday but I believe he's playing hurt.
6/ Both goaltenders Orser and Brandon Butler are out as well as Kyle Haugo, Spencer Bender and Aidan Wilson. Injuries continue to hurt the Riders early.
7/ The smooth skating Evan Reid scored his first of the season on Friday. He was a defensemen last season... Coach Mohr says he likes him up front especially on the penalty kill which was 4-0 Saturday while the power play went 2-5. Reid took a particularly big hit in the second when he held on to the puck for a second... but was ok and played the rest of the game.
8/ Eight of the Riders 25 goals this year came off the power play. Better keep practicing that...
9/ Bowling, Mack Differenz rolled a strike while heading off the ice at the end of a shift in the second when he slid into a few pins trying to get on the the ice.
10/ And yes Tayler Sincennes deserved the misconduct he got after his goal, as he was celebrating skating by his bench he took a little shot at one of the Grizz players as he was passing by their bench. I think only me and the referee saw it.
11/ Keagan Kingwell had an assist Saturday and now leads the D in scoring with 4 pts in 7 games. He is a big mobile part of the D this year.
12/ Dalton Bouvier and Jacen Richards are now AP's and will play midget. Richards is still out with a neck injury he picked up in the preseason. Rider Prue has left the team, he is looking for a place to play where he will get a bigger role. Someone will pick him up.
13/ The first 3 goals Saturday came off of point shots, Don Cherry never stops preaching that, it sure worked Sat.
14/ There was no radio broadcast last Friday from Invermere, they have no phone lines there that the radio can use. Howie Ashmore, The Drive's Account Executive and Tom Ross the PxP guy tell us they will fix that with a cell phone next time. I watched the game on the webcast but they don't know our players names and you can't see the numbers... so much for that.
15/ The Riders wore their new "Cancer Jerseys" last weekend, fans can bid on them on the Riders website or click here The Fernie Friends for Friends group will get the proceeds from the Jersey Auction.
16/ Fernie Ford's Drive One For Your Community event went well and they say we had.. about 200 drivers meaning about $4000. The Ghostrider executive thanks Fernie Ford for doing this fundraiser and thanks to the players for all their labour and cooking skills.
17/ The Riders host Grand Forks next Friday then play in Golden next Saturday before playing Golden here in Fernie next Sunday
18/ Former Ghostrider centre Sam Plaquin has taken a job as an assistant coach with the CNHA Bantam AA Canucks in Calgary. Sam was outstanding for the Rider last season and we wish him all the best as he gets his feet wet coaching this year.

Round the League
Well no soccer this week, meaning no more yellow cards handed out either, check September's KIJHL schedule if you don't know what I mean.
In Sicamous the Osoyoos Coyotes Rainer Glimpel scored 5 goals in a 7-4 win Saturday shooting him up in the scoring race just 2 points behind Eric Buckley in 3 less games. Osoyoos is 5-1-0-1 so far and look to be one of the better teams again this season. Unfortunately we don't get them here in Fernie this year.
The Beaver Valley Nitehawks lost their first game of the year Saturday at home as well 2-1 to Spokane who were outshot 45-23 G Blake Norman was the Brave POG --BV is 7-1 now.
Gimme that Old Tyme Religion -- Kimbo and Revy duke it out in the third Friday, Nitro's win 4-3 in OT See the PIM's here
Castlegar's Joseph Mcleod shutout Princeton 6-0 in Princeton last Friday, the Rebels have a 7-2 record.
It appears that 100, Kimberley, Creston and Fernie have the best attendance numbers so far in the league... too bad most teams don't report their #'s or their trades... Tyler Garcia was moved from 100 Mile to Nelson the other day, not unusual cept I thought for sure the solid Garcia was Duner's kinda guy, he twice played in Kimberley and now twice in Nelson See here
100 Mile shutout Golden 8-0 in 100 in front of 520 the other night and G Zane Steeves was not the player of the game. Golden hasn't won a game yet... but still a shutout....Steeves beat the Riders and Kimberley a few weeks ago as well.
AND FINALLY ---NCAA FUN TIME
MINNEAPOLIS — Former Canadian women's hockey team coach Shannon Miller and two other former University of Minnesota-Duluth female coaches have filed a discrimination lawsuit against the school saying they lost their jobs because they're female and gay.

Ghostriders are in Invermere Friday then home to Revy Saturday
The Riders are in Invermere Friday night and Rockies Coach Wade Dubielewicz says “I’m really excited about (our upcoming games because) we’re going to have two good tests: Fernie and Kimberley. The things we’ve been working on and continually getting better at are going to be put to the test against both of those teams.” Full Story by Breanne Massy Here
These teams have not played yet in the regular season and Invermere has played some good teams very close so far this season, so this should be a good one and fans from both teams can watch the game on the KIJHL website or listen to the game on The Drive 99.1 right here.

On Saturday
The Ghostriders play the Revelstoke Grizzlies Saturday here in Fernie and this is the only time that Revelstoke will play here this season. The Riders play in Revelstoke on Saturday November 28th.
The Grizz were in Kimberley last night and played two games last weekend, they defeated Columbia Valley 7-4 in Invermere and lost 4-3 at home to Kimberley. Their record after last weekend was 2-3 and they were in fourth place in their division.
Revelstoke is privately owned and Ryan Parent is the Head Coach and GM.
Ghostriders
The Ghostriders played two games last weekend, they won 6-3 in Golden and lost 3-2 in overtime here in Fernie last Saturday against the 100 Mile House Wranglers .
After last weekend the Riders had a 3-1-0-1 record and were firmly in third place just one point behind Creston and 5 behind Kimberley, but Kimberley had played 3 more games.
Team Captain Cole Keebler leads the Riders in scoring with 9 goals and 2 assists in his first 5 games. Justin Peers is next with 7 points while Zach Befus has 2 goals and 2 assists in three games.
Injuries
The Riders have been plagued with injuries early in the season but are slowly healing up. Spencer Bender, Tayler Sincennes, Kyle Haugo, Jacen Richards and Aidan Wilson are all in the sick bay this week, but are possibles for the weekend. Justin Peers will be available Saturday after serving 2 games for a check to the head in Golden. The Ghostriders signed Alex Cheveldave last Tuesday, he is a 19 year old forward with Junior “A” experience in Yorkton and Drayton Valley. The Roundup-Weekend Chasing Idiots Sofa Kings Cradle Robbers etc
The Weekly Roundup
Last Weekend
The Ghostriders had a 6-3 win in Golden on Friday then picked up a point in their home opener when they lost 3-2 in overtime against the 100 Mile House Wranglers on Saturday.
On the Road Again
On Friday after a long bus ride the Ghostriders had a slow first period in Golden but still managed to come out of it tied 2-2 ... despite being outshot 15-8. Cole Keebler from Peers, then Keebler from Wilson and Thomsen scored the goals.
In the second the shots were 17-5 only this time for the Riders and Aidan Wilson from Differenz and Thomsen then Keebler from Peers scored ending the period with a 4-2 lead.
In the third the Rockets scored shorthanded but Zach Befus from Keebler made it 5-3 then Mack Differenz scored into the empty net for a 6-3 W and a 43-27 shot advantage in their fourth road game in a row.
The Home Opener vs 100 Mile House
After losing 5-0 in Creston the night before the Wranglers came out very slow in the first 10 minutes here in Fernie. The Riders were all over them and probably deserved at least one goal anyway but Zane Steeves, who shutout Kimberley last week, (Thanks Zane) played very well. The Wranglers seemed to get some legs after that and ended up with some good chances of their own by the end of the first but neither team scored.
In the second 100's Liam Cumberbirch scored first but a few minutes later Mitch Titus from Kingwell and Befus got one on the power play and the period ended 1-1.
In the third Alex Hansen took advantage of a tripped on the blueline "D" and put one past Jeff Orser for a 2-1 lead. Half way through the period Ryan Teslak scored his first of the season from Keebler and Befus on the PP for a 2-2 tie.
In the OT Brady Ward scored the winner for the Wranglers.
The shots were 46-32 for the Riders who went 2-8 on the PP and killed all 3 PP's against. Jeff Orser was in net and had to make a few big saves gaining the Riders a valuable point in the standings.
The First Time
1/ The 100 Mile game was the first time I've seen the Riders in a real game. They have some good speed and easily generated enough good chances to win, Steeves (who could have been 100's POG) stopped at least three breakaways and a few other big chances.
2/ Mack Differenz was back in the lineup after getting hurt in the opening weekend, he looked good and had a goal and an assist in Golden just missing on some points here in Fernie as well. The Coaches are hoping he can be a differenz maker this season.
3/ RW Zach Befus had 2 assists vs 100 and has had a point in every game.
4/ LW Rider Prue played his first game Saturday and showed some flashes, he will help when he gets settled in here in Fernie, and his first name will make for some confusion in the media... I hope.
5/ News Flash... Cole Keebler didn't score a goal Saturday after scoring 9 goals in his first 4 games... despite having a couple of great looks. But he did have an assist
6/ Rookie D- men Kevin Pierce (98) and Keagan Kingwell (97) lead the D in scoring with 3 assists each, just wait for a month or so when they really get used to the KI. You can say that about several of the new players as well.
7/ You could argue, and I will, that the Riders would have had a better fate vs 100 with top guns Justin Peers and Spencer Bender in the lineup. Peers is suspended 2 games for a head contact hit in Golden and Bender is out with an injury for the foreseeable future, which could be next weekend the way these kids heal. Injured players Dalton Bouvier, Taylor Sincennes, Kyle Haugo and Jacen Richards were all out and would have helped as well. Pretty early for all these injuries.
8/ Kinda like Evan Reid up front, ( played D last season) he can really wheel, beat guys one on one, and has a bit of a mean streak in him, he has no points yet and missed on a breakaway Saturday but I believe it will come.
9/ Mitch Titus was the POG Saturday... pretty exciting to watch and should have had at least one more goal.
10/ The new fitter trimmer Jeff Orser will be put to the test with Brandon Butler out for yet another weekend coming up. He has played all the games in net so far winning 3 losing 1 in regulation and 1 in OT.

Sofa Kings
After losing 2 points last season for using an ineligible player Kelowna didn't learn from their mistakes and lost 3 points again last week when they didn't check to see if all their personnel had been approved by Hockey Canada. This is (say this fast) sofa king-- stupid, get on your phone and check the website, if is says something other than approved don't let em in the game.
Chase Heat President Scott Koch thinks "I'm" an idiot for bringing this Kelowna story up on Twitter (sarcastically of course). But if he wants the league to look good, and I assume he does, he would be much better served by going after his brothers in Kelowna for not checking the HC site. After the Nelson fiasco last season Read that story here if you don't remember the team Presidents, GM's and Coaches should be vigilant and attack each other whenever this happens, not the KIJHL President or the media for reporting it. When this kind of thing happens it hurts the league, and we need every recruiting advantage we can get, so Scott, go after your brothers and tell em to check, check check, just like you tell your players. OR you can do this below...
The almost 80 year old KIJHL President Bill Ohlhausen tells me that when ever this happens he is the "lightning rod" and has to take the heat for the team's mistakes. But, as Bill says (but not quite like I'm going to say it) the answer for guys who are too lazy to check the HC site is to hire someone to be in charge of registering every player coach and trainer. Other leagues do this... if the teams are really concerned about their image, and checking the HC site is just to much of a burden... then check your wallets and hire someone!
Now how's this for irony, this time the Nelson Leafs get the points from the Kelowna's mistake More on this here the Leafs still got a few more miles to go though.
Players on the trail of something big
The Ghostrider players and coaches helped out Pat Gilmar of the Fernie Trails Alliance last week building the new Montane bike and hiking trail. The Fernie Trails Alliance has done as much and maybe more for tourism than the ski hill has with all the bike trails they have built making Fernie an all season destination. Gilmar should get the Spiritus award or something, that's him on the left in the first pic. Click for large view
Letter from the Mayor
The boys helped the City put in and take out the boards covering the ice for the Mine Rescue Competition a few weeks ago.
From Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano
Please pass my sincere gratitude to the Ghostrider boys for all their assistance this past weekend They were truly terrific and I thank them more than words can express Mary.
NCAA Cradle Robbers
Now how about the high and mighty NCAA who won't allow kids to even play an exhibition game in the WHL because that would make them professional. But it's OK to get 14 year old's committed to College? This from Gregg Drinnan G Boston Bilous has committed to Denver University where he will play for the Pioneers. Bilous, from Langley, B.C., is 14 years of age and attends the Delta, B.C., Hockey Academy. The commitment is for 2019-20. He is eligible for the WHL’s 2016 bantam draft. Kinda like in Vietnam when drafted 18 year olds weren't allowed to drink but could shoot people.
Doug Brown from the Athlete's Factory put the boys through their paces in the gym last week
For those who like this, and I know your out there...

Standings after Saturday Night- that point was important
And finally, and not a moment to soon,
In a move that will mean almost nothing to fans, BC Hockey has named Brian Harrison as the Junior Division Coordinator. Now occasionally we see some infighting going on regarding player transfers, 30 day suspensions carding etc between the leagues and I assume from now on Harrison will be the moderator, mediator ? This is a newly created position so I don't know what BC Hockey has up their sleeves, but I'm sure good or bad we'll find out in the coming months. Below is the press release.
Harrison Named Junior Division Coordinator
Wednesday, September 23, 2015
BC Hockey announced Wednesday, September 23, 2015 that Brian Harrison (Mill Bay, BC) has been named the Junior Division Coordinator. Harrison will provide general oversight of the Junior hockey programs within BC Hockey, working closely with the teams and leagues.
