No Crossovers, no fun, less fans ?

Play by play guy Dustin Scafe brings up an interesting point in his Tweet Thursday night.

Dustin Scafe
@dustinscafe
One of best parts of Jr Hockey is going on long road trips with the boys and seeing new places. Please don't take that away from the KIJHL

He was responding to the KIJHL Governors who are about to finalize their new schedule that will not have crossovers. That, for those who don’t know, means the Kootenay Conference will only play games against teams in the Kootenay Conference. Same for the Okanagan Shuswap Conference, essentially making two leagues.

The teams from the Okanagan Shuswap Conference are the main culprits and have been complaining for years about travel and money. However some of the mileage mathematicians can show it’s not all that valid of an argument.

Plus, as a fan, I really look forward to seeing the teams from the other Conference as do all fans in the league. But the league Governors, as usual, have the fans wishes at the bottom of their list. If it were up to me we would not only have crossovers, we would have a full crossover featuring one visit from every team in the league every year.

Cyclone fun, Players pay the price not the Dewar, Scouts Rats Round the league

June 9th 2016- 6 AM

So  one of the biggest KIJHL stories out there since the 100 Mile House Wranglers won the KI, Cyclone and Keystone last April was the awarding of the 2017  Cyclone Taylor Cup to Coach Jeff Dubois and his Creston Thunder Cats.

Cyclone Fun House
Creston, Kimberley, Beaver Valley, Revelstoke and the Kamloops Storm all put in bids to be the host team but it was Creston who had the winning bid. And they got it fair and square… but don’t tell that to Kamloops Storm Owner and GM Barry Dewar who was so pissed he didn’t get it that he leaked out his thoughts to Adam Williams of Kamloops This Week.

Why "I" Should Get the Money- By Barry Dewar
“Players will pay the price.. “We” would have had a great event and would have been very financially successful for both ourselves and BC Hockey”. Then he played the scout card...  the “Scouts” won't  see the players to the degree that they would if it was in Kamloops"…

Why I'm glad he didn't get the money- By Rider News

Yes Barry the scouts won't bother to travel to Creston... cause we all know that hockey scouts don’t travel all over the place to get an edge on the other teams. Maybe Lord Baden Dewar was thinking about them scouts who wear the weird shorts and hang around in tents.

So a private owner is pissed because he won’t be able to fill his pockets and some hillbillies  with a  small town backwoods community owned team are gonna get his money. And don’t even get me started on BC Hockey, guaranteed Dewar couldn’t give a rat’s ass about them and I know that every team that has ever done the huge amount of work that goes into hosting the Cyclone Taylor only spitefully gave their  10% to  BC Hockey... who's main contribution at the games is to watch the gate to make sure they get their share.

The Spirit Moves Me

The spirit of the  KIJHL Governors is suppose to be  "We are Partners " one for all and all for one. So his whining  drivel is way out of line (thus this column) and fans are going to see what kind of a "partner" he is in the coming months. Small town "Community owned" teams used to be what the KIJHL was all about, but increasingly we're seeing big city teams with private owners take over, next up is Williams Lake and then Quesnel.

‘Round the League in the last few weeks.

Our natural born enemies from Kimberley have hired a new Head Coach and General Manager in Derek Stuart. Long time Rider fans may remember Stuart from the 1995-98 Jr A RMJHL seasons where he got his start in junior hockey with Kimberley. In his final season KD went 49-5 and Stuart had 57 goals and 47 assists.  Tim Tisdale was the Head Coach and Jerry Bancks was also on the bench as well  back then.

Stuart’s father Jim saved the team when he bought it then held it for a while before selling it (or giving it back, I don’t remember the particulars) and a couple of years later the old RMJHL folded... Who can remember  this sh@*t anyway, I need'a get a life.

The Castlegar Rebels Head Coach and General Manager Jesse Dorans has taken a job in Drayton Valley with the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Thunder. You can read that story here
No word yet on who the new Rebel coach will be. Everyone is still waiting on Trail who is about to hire someone shortly. Good for Jesse Dorans taking a step up to the Jr A  AJHL.

And finally, and not a moment to soon, former Ghostrider and Fernie local Dave LeNeveu is now part of the ownership group in Nanaimo where he will be the President and Governor of the BCHL Clippers. Read the full story by Greg Sakai here   Congrats Dave.

The KIJHL season is officially over... Senior Citizens,Swords,Sheriffs Montezuma how to fix stuff

The Wins Keep on Coming

Another KIJHL season has now come to an end with the 100 Mile House Wranglers being crowned the Western Canadian Champions. The Wranglers won the  KI by defeating Kimberley 4 games to 1, the Cyclone Taylor Gold Medal by defeating the undefeated Victoria Cougars 5-4 and the Keystone Cup by defeating another undefeated team, the AGI Quakers, 3-2 in OT.

Senior Citizens
As usual the other B Leagues are allowed many more older players and Saskatchewan's AGI  Quakers were no exception, they had 2- 21 yr olds,  8-20's a few 19 yr olds’s along with a smattering of 18 year old's... imagine their surprise when they found out they were at the Keystone and not the Allen Cup...

It's hard to win a championship.
Congratulations to former Rider Head Coach and GM Dale Hladun, better known as Duner, on winning everything.

Victoria's Secret
After the Cyclone was over this Tweet came out from the Victoria Cougars... it said  something that is apparently not universally agreed on.  "The team that defeats you deserves your respect. Period. Cougar nation is cheering on the 100 Mile House Wranglers. Keep that Cup in BC.

Oh When the Saints Come Marching In
Also after the Cyclone a newspaper story came out where Kimberley HC Jerry Bancks, in a thinly veiled attack on the Wranglers winning style of hard hits and finish your checks hockey, chimed in with a few disparaging remarks about the league after it allowed someone else to win. Below is the gist of the article, and the link to the full article is HERE

I would like to see the league get rid of some of the things that exist in it.
It's sometimes thought as a greasy league and not as developmental as is should be.
There are some people in the league who are more into using intimidation, taking advantage of one official on the ice who may be overwhelmed in a certain situation.
Kids don't come because they want to get injured.
I'm proud of the fact we had success playing the right way.

Anyway, you get the point... he hates to lose.

So I showed that article to the Sheriff of Wrangler nation and he had this to say... but didn't go as far as to send out the Posse.
1/ Only one team had suspension majors in our series, wasn't the Wranglers.
2/ Only one team got unsportsmanlike PIM's for making a mockery of play by diving, wasn't the Wranglers.
3/ Only one team's bench continually called officials over to chat, wasn't the Wranglers.

From a Rider standpoint there was a game in December where two players ended up with uncalled broken fingers, wasn't the Nitro's. One player missed several games with an uncalled head shot resulting in a concussion, wasn't the Nitro's... there is much more, by both sides, but you get the idea.

Live by the Sword ...
Bancks also had his own wrecking ball, Brody Buhler in the lineup. If his charges weren't intimidation I don't know what is. (But I woulda loved him in a Rider uni just the same). Buhler got hurt in the playoffs and his intimidation (that's what it is called if the other team does it)  was missed way more than the 8 points he brought to the party.

 Was it...Montezuma's  Revenge
Back when Duner was in Fernie he brought in Goalie Phoenix Logan Hill, he was injured with a concussion after being intentionally run by Nitro Dallin Wolff (read the 3rd period PIM's click here) who had 36 points and 397 PIM in 128 games.

All that being said Jerry Bancks was a great coach and has been around the Dynamiters as long as I can remember, even back in the old RMJHL days when he took over a sputtering Nirto's squad mid season and made a good team out of them. Anyway Bancks is retiring and Kimberley will have a huge hole to fill especially considering he was giving them the home town discount and the new guy will likely be in the $40,000 dollar range. They also lost assistant coach and former Nitro standout Jeff Keiver, GM Mike Reid (Cranbrook AA Midget) and Chad Koran who was President.

Next up is the KIJHL AGM in June but in a couple of weeks they will have a little pre game meeting (pre game nap ?) to decide what exactly they will be voting on in June. One of the things is the cost of the aforementioned Keystone Cup.

For the Cyclone tournament the lion's share of costs are covered. When Fernie hosted it a few years ago the teams, referees and the vultures from BC Hockey all had their  hotels and meals supplied. But the Keystone is a different animal and the Wranglers expenses were around $30,000... if you win you lose so to speak so I'm sure there will be some interesting discussion on that topic. Read about 100's expenses here

And finally ... it looks like longtime HC and GM Terry Jones is leaving the Nitehawks. Here is the press release.

Rider Award Winners

The voice of the Ghostrider webcast Dan McSkimming was the MC and team President Barb Anderson gave her annual speech at the Annual Awards Banquet.

Wayne Gowanlock is the Volunteer of the Year. There would be no Fernie Ghostriders without all of the volunteers.

Ghostriders Annual Awards Banquet on March 3rd 2016. Click on the photos for larger sizes.

. .
All players Coaches and Trainers
In the front row are some of the people you don't hear nearly enough about.  Head Coach and GM  Craig Mohr, Assistant Coaches Pascal Morency, Gerry Pang and Jeff Zmurchyk. Athletic Therapists Kayla Neufeld and Heather Callahan.

All the Award Winners Coaches and  the Twenty Year Old Players who were given their
Jerseys at the Banquet, #25 Cole Keebler, #24 Dustin Watt, #1 Jeff Orser, #5 Travis Thomsen  and # 18 Coleton Dawson.
All the best in the future you guys.

Mitch Titus #17 was named as the Ghostriders Rookie of the Year. In a year where injuries were the big story for the Riders Mitch played all 52 games as a 17 year old centre picking up 11 goals and 31 points. The other rookie forwards, of which there were many, were, in no particular order, #13 Centre Ryan Kennedy,  #15, Centre Ty Carron, #27 Mack Differenz, #9 Nolan Legace and AP Centre #12 Evan Traverse.

Keagan Kingwell #4 was named as the Top Defenseman. Great skater and he hit deceptively hard. I'm thinking there was some deliberation on this one as his D partner Ryan Teslak  is just as mobile but maybe not quite as strong, but a year younger and in his second KIJHL season. Ryan played in Castlegar last year. The other D-men were  Kyle Haugo, who missed considerable time with injuries, an emerging Trevor Broad (98)  Kevin Pierce (98) who made some big strides this season not the least of which was in the Kimberley series when one of the Nitro's took a run at him and KP got his arms up blasted him, a little meanness will really help his game. And the Riders two twenties Travis Thomsen and Dustin Watt, both in their fourth years, they were solid on the line  and helped the younger guys find their way in the league.
AP Derek Green filled in admirably as well and is anxious to come back next season.

Cole Keebler #25 was the Riders Most Exciting Player and the Riders Top Scorer with 27 goals and 31 assists in 30 games. Cole missed 22 games with injuries, had he played a full season he was easily on pace to win the KIJHL scoring title and was leading the league in scoring for weeks even after he got hurt.

Zach Befus #14 was the MVP, Befus was a great all around player who could score (25 Goals 28 Assists) make big hits, play defensively and play through injuries as well. Zach is 19 and has some College opportunities for next season.

(

The Most Improved player was #7  Dan Burgess. Dan started out on the  blue-line but was moved up to the wing mid season where he found his calling. Unfortunately an injury kept him out of the playoffs. That was probably a hard award for the Coaches as several players improved as the season went on. Ryan Kennedy, Nolan Legace, Trevor Broad, along with Mack Differenz and Aidan Wilson and Evan Reid who went from D last season to forward this year, all got better as the season wore on.

Alex Cheveldave #23 was the Playoff MVP. Alex played as a forward at the start of the year but  by the end of the season he was switched to D where he excelled and was easily the hardest Rider to play against. Honourable mention to Mack Differenz and Aidan Wilson who had 5 and 4 points in the post season.

Goaltender Brandon Butler was named as the Most Inspirational Player. Brandon played with a broken foot all season but persevered. Honourable mention to Coleton Dawson who had surgery on his orbital bone then put on a cage to play in the playoffs, along with Mack Differenz who also played with a cage and no teeth. Many others played hurt through the season as well.

Melanie Jolicoeur (3rd from the Left in the front row) leads her group in a Yoga Pose

96 Tears (if you know that song your probably 96)
Justin Peers finished tied with Zach Befus in scoring with 53 points and they lead a group of 7 19 year old's who are eligible to return next season. The other 96's are Alex Cheveldave, Tayler Sincennes, Brandon Butler, Dan Burgess and Evan Reid. All these guys have their good points, and some other 96's could show up  in September...glad I'm not the one making the decisions, you can only keep 5 of the 1996's.
