Smooth skating D Tristan Downe will miss another month with an injury.
Ben Shushkovsky showed up this week, fans may remember him from last season where he played 12 games before  an injury ended his season. Ben plays both forward and D so is a very useful player.

Riders win and now get ready for Creston

Riders get a 6-2 home ice win vs Invermere.
Next up is Creston in Creston Friday then Creston
plays here in Fernie Saturday.

By Saturday both teams will be much closer to their opening rosters,
so Saturday's game should be a good one.

Main Camp 2016 is over

The Ghostriders Main Camp finished up Sunday afternoon and Head Coach Craig Mohr was "very, very happy" with the way it turned out. The veteran players from last season came ready to play and although they let up on some potential huge hits the games were competitive.

The players who were here last season in training camp remarked that this year's camp was much better than last year and they are looking forward to the regular season start up on September 9th in Kimberley, or in Cranbrook if the City workers are out due to a labour dispute.

But first there are four exhibition games to get through, August 30th  vs Invermere then on the 31st vs Invermere right here in Fernie.  September 2nd the Riders play in Creston then on Saturday September 3rd Creston is here in Fernie.

Coach Mohr signed 6 players after Camp.
Mike Dyck (98) a centre from Calgary,

Matt Rogers (98) a winger from Delta BC

Main Camp this weekend

The Ghostriders Main Camp goes Friday Saturday and Sunday at the Fernie Memorial Arena. Head Coach Craig Mohr tells me he's got 13 veterans back in camp including new Captain Alex Cheveldave. Mohr also has several prospects, and some good locals skating as well.

The four games should be entertaining and any interested fans are encouraged to come out take a look at the start of this year's team.

As usual when all the junior "A" Camps are done more players will show up in town but several of the guys skating this weekend are expected to make the opening roster.

Pascal Morency moves on and says goodbye to the players and staff.

Ghostrider Assistant Coach Pascal Morency has left the Riders for the QMJHL where he will serve as an Assistant Coach with the Val-D'Or Foreurs. Pascal sent this note to the "News" Saturday afternoon.

Dear Riders,

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to the organization. Coach Craig for his skills, confidence and acknowledgement towards me. The Godfather "Panger the legend" for his insightful advice and wisdom. The iron man Jeff for his position as a role model and all the players for their openness and their values. They all have been a significant part of my journey and stepping stones in my life.

What a great community, and it is a privilege to be able to play this unique game of hockey in a town like Fernie BC. I see many great memories that will be created with this organization in near future as it is lead and guided by an amazing staff. I will miss these two beings (Heather Lewis and Kayla Newfeld) that care for players inside and outside of themselves and Darren, Brader and Donavan for their amazing kindness.

Keep being this organization of value which is open to always evolve and change. Keep developing players inside out for not only their career but their life as well. I will follow you from across Canada!

Riders, remain the shinning light that you are for the KJIHL.

Sincerely

Pascal

Meet The Ghostriders New Captain

Rider boss Craig Mohr has just announced that  Alex Cheveldave will be the team Captain this season.

Cheveldave contacted Rider HC and GM Craig Mohr last week and said that he wanted to play in Fernie again this season. My guess is Mohr probably jumped right out of his phone to shake his hand and offer him the the Captains "C when he got that call.

Last season Alex started out on the wing but played the last half on the blueline and was named and the Team Playoff MVP at the end of the year. As a 20 year old Cheveldave brings lots of experience that includes a run with the Jr A Yorkton Terriers of the SJHL.

Cheveldave also plays with a pretty good "edge" and makes the enemy keep their heads up.  Coach Mohr plans to play him on the blueline, his normal position, this year... but if anything happens up front, he is an excellent option. Chevy will be the Riders  25th "C".

WELCOME BACK ALEX ! ... getting any ideas #14

Be Careful Where You Sign Boys

BC HOCKEY BULLETIN
Hockey Canada, its member Branches, Major Junior and registered Junior Hockey Leagues in Canada are concerned with the proliferation of leagues that operate outside the auspices of Hockey Canada.

Hockey Canada offers the best development programs worldwide. It has invested significant resources in the development of officials, coaches, administrators and players countrywide. We have a committed strategy toward a cohesive long term athlete development model.

These non-member organizations do not support the development of these programs. Further, they operate in a vacuum, with no consideration to the impact of their programs on minor, junior, senior, adult recreational hockey, female hockey, officiating development, coaching development or administrator development in Canada. These non-member leagues instead choose to utilize the resources already developed by Hockey Canada and its member Branches.

The teams who make up these "leagues" operate in this fashion because they do not agree with the existing overall vision of Hockey Canada. They profess to have a better program yet often operate without a constitution, by- laws, create their own rule book and may not provide adequate insurance for their participants. Further, they offer the lure of "Rep" or "Junior" level competition when this is clearly not the case.

Hockey Canada, its member Branches, Major Junior Leagues as well as registered Junior Hockey Leagues wish to be exceedingly clear with our response to these programs.

Definition:
Hockey Canada and its member Branches view all leagues that operate outside the auspices/sanctioning of Hockey Canada programs to be classified as non-member leagues. This currently does not include summer hockey leagues/teams, adult recreational hockey leagues/teams, high school hockey, and/or hockey schools.
Sanctions
  1. 1)  Any individual who participates (knowingly or otherwise) in non-member programs after September 30 of the season in question ("the Cut-Off Date") will lose all membership privileges with Hockey Canada for the remainder of that season, and may only reapply for membership with Hockey Canada after the end of that season. "Participation" in an non-member program will be considered to have occurred if the individual takes part in one game (including an exhibition, tournament, league or playoff game) after the Cut-Off Date.
If a participant makes the choice to participate in these non-member programs, they must understand the ramifications of that choice and that the sanctions described in this paragraph will remain in effect even if the league or team folds, or the individual is released, suspended or fired.
  2. 2)  Hockey Canada and its member Branches across the country will make every effort to ensure that local minor hockey and female hockey associations in areas where non-member leagues exist are not supporting these leagues in any manner whatsoever. For greater certainty, "supporting" includes, but is not limited to, assisting an non-member league directly or indirectly through  advertisement, promotion, ticket sales, volunteer activities, assigning Officials, sharing resources or enabling such a league to participate in Hockey Canada sanctioned activities. We will withhold tournament sanctions and will preclude such associations from benefitting from any Hockey Canada/Branch/CHL sanctioned event by whatever means necessary, including the withdrawal of any such event from any community within the geographic boundaries of that association if need be to stress this point.
This policy is aimed at those leagues that choose to operate outside the hockey structure established by Hockey Canada, its member Branches and the Canadian Hockey League.
