Ghostrider News Oct 29th

Ghostrider Notes October 29th

The Ghostriders split last weekend, they lost  2-1 to Kamloops and won 4-2 against Castlegar, both games were in Fernie.

Ethan Jang returned from a month long injury last weekend and fit right in with several hits and his usual high speed play. Jang had an assist on Dylan Defosse’s goal vs Kamloops and scored a power play goal vs Castlegar.

Niki Sombrowski played Friday then went and played a Jr A game with Salmon Arm Saturday where he got his first Jr A point. Sombrowski took a crushing hit Friday but fortunately was alright. Can’t afford too many of those.

Storm forward Brett Metro was taunting the beer section a few times Friday then took a Gross Misconduct PIM in the third right in front of his new beer section buddies.

I won’t even describe what Metro was simulating he was doing to a player who was down on the ice, and if I, someone who loves the theatrics and mayhem didn’t like it....

So far the suspension isn’t listed, that usually means BC Hockey is sticking their noses into it, so maybe 6 games ?

Speaking of suspensions, and we just were, Kelowna’s  star forward Brody Dale who leads the KIJHL with 20 goals and 32 assists in 17 games is out for a couple of games for a 5 minute head shot against Beaver Valley. I think he was mad because he only scored 1 goal.

We only mention that because the Ghostriders play in Kelowna on Friday night. And without their top line in tact they aren’t very good... that’s according to Nelson Leaf Mitchell Lavoie.  In Tyler Harper’s Nelson Star newspaper interview Lavoie says “I didn’t think they were very good,” “I thought, one line and a couple solid other guys...

Hope he’s right

David Lenzin got blasted to the ice in the Kamloops game  but was back Riding the next night and got his first points, a goal and an assist, with the Riders vs Castlegar.

Brendan Nemes had what turned out to be the game winner vs the Rebels and Jordan Kromm had a goal and 2 assists and has taken over the Riders scoring lead with 15 points in 15 games. David Lenzin and Kyle Ford are next with 14.

Rookie D man Sawan Gill who could be the rookie of the year had 2 assists and was the Riders Player of the Game. The much improved Derek Green was named as the Player of the Game Friday.

In the 2-1 loss to Kamloops the Riders went 0-7 on the power play... even one goal gives them a point... or bar in instead of out late in the third period would have tied the game.

The Tim Horton’s Player of the Week is Sawan Gill and the McDonald’s Practice Player is the speedy Johnny Elias.

The Riders play in Kelowna (15 wins 1 tie and 1 OT L) and North Okanagan (3-11 with 1 default loss) this weekend. Both games are scheduled Drive 99.1 Radio Broadcast Games.

Despite outshooting Sicamous 56-29 the Revelstoke Grizzlies have finally lost a game so there are no perfect teams left.

Ghostriders make some changes

Ghostrider Head Coach Jeff Wagner made a few changes to his roster yesterday. First of all he sent goaltender Zak Larson’s Hockey Canada rights to Grand Forks for a player development fee.

Wagner kept three goalies (so everyone knew something was going to happen) until yesterday but with December 1st on the horizon and the fact that as the season wears on it can get harder and harder to find a place for guys to play, he made some moves.

The goal isn’t just to get down to 23, you want to find spots for your guys to play.

Larson is a twenty year old and the two other goalies Riley Fonger and Justin Faiella are 18 and 19 so could play in Fernie next season, in junior you alway have to look ahead.

Press Release
The Fernie Ghostriders have sent (98) G Zak Larson to the Grand Forks Border Bruins for a PDF. The organization would like to thank Zak for his time and effort over the last year and a half and wish him all the best in Grand Forks.

Next Wagner brought in David Lenzin from Revelstoke for a PDF. Lenzin is another 20 year old (you can carry 5, Fernie has 4)  who had some really good numbers in Revy, 5 goals and 6 assists in 7 games so he should be able to add lots to the Rider offence plus he plays on the PP. Lenzin will be in the lineup Friday and Saturday here in Fernie.

Press release. The Fernie Ghostriders are excited to announce the acquisition of (98) F David Lenzin from the Revelstoke Grizzlies! He will be in the line up this weekend! Welcome to Fernie, David. #RideTogether

With the addition of Lenzin coach Wagner had to find a spot for 18 year old winger Cole Gibson who had 2 assists in 8 games. Gibson is going to Beaver Valley to a coach (Terry Jones) that the players really seem to like.

 Press Release
The Fernie Ghostriders have sent (00) F Cole Gibson to the Beaver Valley NiteHawks in exchange for a PDF. We thank Cole for his time with the team and wish him the best in his future endeavours!

Ghostrider News and Notes Oct 24

The Ghostriders split last weekend’s games winning 3-2 at home against Chase then losing 3-1 on the road in Kimberley.

Against Chase the goal scorers were Jordan Kromm with his 6th from Brendan Nemes. Owen Titus with his 3rd from Eric Welford and Keelan Saworski from Sawan Gill and Dylan Defosse scored the game winning goal on the power play. Justin Faiella was in net for the win, it was his second win in three games. The shots were 37-26 Fernie and 630 fans were at the game.

In Kimberley the Riders lost 3-1 and were outshot 38-15 but Riley Fonger kept the game close and was named as the player of the game. Nikolas Sombrowski from Kory Zinck and Kyle Ford scored the Rider goal and the attendance was 581.

Ghostrider Notes

The Tim Horton’s Player of the Week was shared by goalies Riley Fonger and Justin Faiella and the McDonald’s Practice Player of the Week was Chase Fioretti.
Both Jordan Kromm and Brendan Nemes left the game in Kimberley after an uncalled hits and slashes. They are  day to day but possible for this weekend games.

Saturday's game vs Castlegar will be the last game in the Fernie arena for about a month, or until the roof repairs are finished. The City says they should be done by December 1st. They were right about the new ice plant starting on time, so lets give them the benefit of the doubt.

So with that in mind coach Wagner tells us the scheduled November 9th and 24th games that are on your beer fridge magnet schedule will be played in Sparwood. The November 15th game vs the suddenly first place contending Rockies will be played in Fernie in January. Both teams will be down to their final playoff roster by then, it will be a good show. The Riders are in Invermere on November 23.

The Kamloops Storm are in town Friday for their one and only game. Kamloops lost 12-2 to Summerland last Friday then won 5-1 last Saturday against Grand Forks and 5-3 vs Chase Tuesday night.

Chris Thon will be back in the Storm lineup  after serving a 4 game suspension but Lincoln Connor who got 6 games for an attempt to injure won’t. Another one who won’t be is their GM Barry Dewar he is suspended for tampering in the off season...but he says it’s a f'n lie and he’s innocent.Well he said something like that anyway. Fact, someone ratted him out, tampering is very hard to prove.

NEXT HOME GAMES
The Castlegar Rebels are in town Saturday, the Ghostriders played a hard fought game in Castlegar September 21st and won 4-0. In that game Brandon Costa hit Eric Welford in the head and got a two game suspension. Welford got two injury weeks.

Right now the Rebels Colby Winla is serving a 4 game match penalty for attempting to injure a Princeton player and Dallas Goodwin is serving a 9 game suspension for head contact on a player and a physical abuse of an official in a game in Kimberley.
Hunter Maximunk is the newest Rebel, he was just traded from Kimberley.Their Head Coach and GM is Carter Duffin.

Round’ the League
Last Sunday the Rockies won in Armstrong and Golden won in Beaver Valley so after the weekend the Rockies were 1 point behind Kimberley and Golden was 1point behind Fernie, but the Riders have 2 games in hand on Golden and one on the Rockies. You have to win those games in hand...two struggling teams, Kamloops and Castlegar, are in town this weekend, these look like two winnable games.

After last weekend the Revelstoke Grizzlies are the only undefeated team. Kelowna has had 1 overtime loss and Nelson lost a game because they used an ineligible player. Kelowna is in Nelson Friday a possible game of the week.

The Ghostriders were involved in the Reach a Reader Initiative !

The Ghostriders were involved in the Reach a Reader Initiative !

This note is from Chrisy Hill
Community Literacy Coordinator
Columbia Basin
Alliance for Literacy

Hi Jeff and Barb,

Thank you so much for involving the Ghostriders in our Reach a Reader campaign once again.  They were all fantastic.  But I do need to mention that a couple teams were exceptional.

The team leader in Sparwood, Jean, called me to make sure I passed on a message that the 3 Ghostriders at her location were AMAZING!  Thank you.

I was personally impressed with all 3 teams in Fernie, but the 2 Ghostriders at the Fernie East Kootenay Community Credit Union nailed it, they were awesome!

Ghostriders Oct 15th update and the usual drivel

The Ghostriders played two games last weekend,
on Friday the Riders lost 4-3 in overtime to the undefeated Revelstoke Grizzlies then on Saturday they lost 5-3 to Creston.

The Riders play in Kimberley Saturday night but it is not a scheduled Drive 99.1 radio broadcast game.

Ghostrider Notebook

Rider HC Jeff Wagner says that after playing the undefeated Revelstoke Grizzlies Friday night in a playoff like atmosphere with 830 fans it was a bit of a let down  the next night with Creston in town and 300 less fans in the building... and the players played that way. New games start Friday.

Aiden Gleisner scored his first goal against Revelstoke, Brendan Nemes scored his 4th and Kyle Ford’s team leading 6th goal was the game tying goal in the third.
Riley Fonger made 38 saves and one was a beauty to keep the game at 3-2 in the third that gave the boys enough motivation to tie the game and  get a point in overtime . It was a good showing.

On Saturday Brendan Nemes and Jordan Kromm (5th) each had a goal and an assist and Keelan Saworski (5th) scored the third goal. Riley Fonger was in net.

Nikolas Sombrowski was not in the Fernie lineup last weekend because he was in Salmon Arm where he played two games as an affiliate with the Jr A Silverbacks. He should be in the lineup Friday, but Ethan Jang is still out for another week or so.

Greg Susinski will serve his one game suspension Friday for a 5 min boarding and game misconduct penalty in the last 10 minutes of the Creston game. Susinski will be eligible for Kimberley Saturday.

D-man Tristan Downe was the Tim Horton’s Player of the Week and Jordan Kromm was the McDonalds Practice Player of the Week.

After playing in Fernie Revelstoke went into Kimberley Saturday and were outshot 32-24 but still managed a 3-2 win. Helps to keep the standings a little closer...

In other news that Rider fans probably dont care about... Arguably the most improved team in the KI is the Columbia Valley Rockies. They are on a 5 game win streak and with 18 points are tied with Kimberley plus have a game in hand... And a game in hand is better than a 6 pack in the bush... is that how that sayin goes?

The Ghostriders play two home games in the last weekend of October against Kamloops and Castlegar. They are the last games in the Fernie arena until the roof is repaired in early December, hopefully just in time for the fans to hog back a few while watching Kimberley’s first game here in Fernie.

I bet Kimberley hopes the rink isn’t finished and the December 1st game is in Sparwood, even with a full house there will be less than half the number of rabid fans that there would be in Fernie.

We will have the full schedule changes here soon but right now its looking like the boys will play two games in Sparwood and play another mid week in the new year.

Friday’s Game

The Chase Heat are in town for their one and only visit to Fernie. Chase won both of their games last weekend 3-1 and 4-3 against Sicamous and are now 2-8 with 1 tie.  Their Head Coach and GM is Brad Fox, he is now in his eighth season with the Heat.

And finally... and not a moment too soon, this is my last chance to electioneer.

There is a municipal election coming up this weekend  and several people are trying to get on council including Dan McSkimming (our PXP announcer and former board member) Phil Iddon (former Ghostrider President) and Tracey Kelly (Minor Hockey president) They are all hockey friendly candidates.

Rider games, notebook and round the league.. and the usual drivel

With an overtime loss in Princeton and an  8-2 win in Osoyoos the Ghostriders picked up 3 of a possible 4 points last weekend.

In the old days before regular season OT and shootouts the saying was a tie is as good as a win on the road.

In Princeton Nikolas Sombrowski, and Dylan Defosse scored the goals and Zak Larson was in net, Zak was named as the Riders player of the game and the shots were even at 31.

In their 8-2 romp over Osoyoos  assistant captain Dylan Defosse had 3 goals and an assist, and was named as the Riders player of the game. Johnny Elias, Kyle Ford and Keelan Saworski had 3 point nights while Brendan Nemes and Greg Susinski each had a goal and an assist. Justin Faiella was in net for the win. The shots were 43-28 for the Riders

Ghostrider Notes

Eighteen year old Kyle Ford leads the team in scoring with 5 goals and 12 points and D-man Greg Susinski is right behind with 10 points. Ethan Jang and Eric Welford did not play last weekend because of injuries. Aidan Gleisner has 3 assists in his first four games. Dylan Defosse’s shorthanded goal in Osoyoos was the Riders 6th SHG in 9 games, next best is Nelson with 4. Sebastian Iannuzzi got his first point in Osoyoos. A new player for fans to watch is Johnny Elias who came over from the Rockies last week, he had 3 points in Osoyoos.

With 4 goals and an assist last weekend Dylan Defosse was picked as the  Tim Horton’s Player of the Week  and the McDonald’s Practice Player of the Week is Keelan Saworski

Round the League

Well it just seems strange that Osoyoos is battling North Oak for the final playoff spot this year. Under former boss Ken Law who was let go in the summer they were always in a first place battle... so far the Coyotes have 2 points and Ken Law’s new team in Kelowna has 21... and the top three scorers in the league

Who needs a new cell plan... the Nelson Leafs Head Coach Mario DiBella thats who... he didnt check the Hockey Canada carding site before their game in Castlegar and inadvertently used an ineligible player so he was suspended one game and worst of all.... and hardest to explain to the players... the boys lost the two points.

Who has a nice new cell plan, and maybe other plans... The 2-7 Castlegar Rebels got both their wins after losing games to Nelson and North Okanagan then checking the Hockey Canada carding site to joyously find out that their opposition was using ineligible players. I wonder if they checked before the game and knew they would win.

Longtime Kamloops owner and GM Barry Dewar got caught trying to recruit two carded players from another team and was nailed for tampering. He got a year suspension and a $10,000 fine. Dewar appealed and had it reduced to 90 days and $1000.
Now we hear BC Hockey wants their pound of flesh too. When they get involved it’s never good, see cages...

Thanks to the crossovers the Revelstoke Grizzlies are in town for their one and only regular season game here in Fernie. The Grizzlies have only played 6 games so far (Fernie has played 9) and they have a perfect 6-0 record and 5 of those games were on the road. They have also scored the most goals on average per game at 7.83
Revy lost in the KIJHL final to Kimberley last year. Like m' or not Ryan Parent has done a pretty good job of rehabbing the Grizz in the last few years.

And finally... did I say how much I hate the new KIJHL site 10 times yet, if you use it to work and look up stats it is a cumbersome nuisance.

Ghostrider update October 2nd... +the usual drivel

With a 5-2 win against the 100 Mile Wranglers and a 3-2 win vs the Golden Rockets  the Ghostriders find themselves tied with the Rockies at 10 points and identical 5-2 records. Kimberley leads with 12 points but have played one more game... Golden (8) and Creston (7) remain within striking distance of the leaders.

Divisional games will be meaningful this year! Say it ain’t so.

Even looking forward to seeing Golden play here once in a while. The Riders could have lost that game or at least had it go to OT. The  Rockets may prove to be a handful in Golden this year.

The City of Fernie has announced that the arena will close November 4th through December 1st.  GM Jeff Wagner is working at rescheduling the three effected games and all the practices.

Ghostrider Notebook

100 Mile’s James Pedersen got a match and  3 game suspension for his slew foot on Jordan Kromm (7pts in 7 games) last Friday. BC Hockey doesn’t like the cheap slew foot very much and we concur ... a player can easily land on the back of his head causing a brain injury... and they're cumulative.

Ethan Jang scored the first goal Friday then Niki Sombrowski scored shorthanded... speed allowed both players to fly by the D for breakaways. Unfortunately Jang is out with an injury for at least a month.

Tim Horton’s Kory Zinck’s shorthanded goal Saturday was the Riders 5th SHG in 7 games. Zinck, Kromm, Sombrowski, Ford and Jang  all have shorties. The KI special teams stat page shows 4 but we know and the team page shows 5, tops in the league so far.

More Tim Horton’s, Riley Fonger with three straight wins and a .953 save % was the well deserved  Tim Horton’s Player of the Week. Hope he plays the whole season here, the Ghost could win a ton’o games.

And even more Tim’s...Tim Horton’s new owners Mike and Kristina Dube have become great Rider supporters... even though Mike was the enemy when he was a Nitro. In 04-05 he had 14 goals, 29 assists 43 points in 42 games on a division winning team. He has to be wondering how the hell I knew that... I have no life Mike haha

With 4 goals  and 4 assists in 7 games Kyle Ford  was the coaches  pick as the Boston Pizza Player of the Month for September. Ford had the game winner in both games last weekend.

Sebastian Iannuzzi who made a couple of nice shot blocks last weekend was the McDonald’s Practice Player of the Week.

D-man Shaun Pierce  had to retire from junior hockey because of injuries. It’s a pissoff to everyone involved including Shaun that a promising 17 year old would have to leave the game because of injuries... the last straw was an uncalled head shot in Castlegar, weren’t the cages suppose to stop that?

New F Aiden Gleisner (6’2” 200) got his first point vs 100 Mile on Friday and new D Josh Dalquist (6’2” 190) had a couple of Rocket players take what were probably cage liberties on him but he kept cool and never took any PIM plus picked up his first point vs Golden. Fans will grow to like this steady D this season and Gleisner as well... love the size factor.

The Ghostriders will be wearing their Cancer jerseys again this month. You can bid on them again this year as well. More on that in the next few days.

Fernie is on the road this weekend with games in Princeton and Osoyoos. Last Friday Princeton became the first team to defeat Kelowna and they have a 3-4 record while Osoyoos is struggling so far this year at 1-5. Both games are scheduled Drive 99.1 radio broadcast games.

There is a municipal election coming up in October and several people are trying to get on council including Dan McSkimming (PXP announcer and former board member) Phil Iddon (former Ghostrider President) and Tracey Kelly (Minor Hockey president) They are all hockey friendly candidates.
Spoken really fast....brought to you by the committee to keep Jr Hockey and good fun here in Fernie.
